IHRC GENEVA INTER-PARLIAMENTARY POVERTY ALLEVIATION INITIATIVES

Parliaments play a crucial role in improving governance and public service delivery. Those countries with strong parliamentary oversight have been able to shape policy directions and priorities. the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) explores the growing role of parliaments in crafting poverty reduction strategies since the process was first launched in 2020.

Although the parliaments in many developing countries still have a long way to go before they will maximize their ability to strengthen the outcomes on implementing schemes of poverty reduction goals, the IHRC consults with legislatures on the ideas for poverty reduction adopted by plenary sessions and the strategies which they can use to produce some important examples of the ways that parliaments can get involved, shape the debate, and learn from the experiences of legislatures in other countries.

The IHRC remains responsive and has designed structures of bringing together national and sub- national Legislatures into the Inter-Parliamentary Poverty Alleviation Initiatives. This is in many ways acknowledged as structure developed through the legislatures for accountable institutions of governance which are often the missing link between anti-poverty efforts and poverty reduction. This is in line with the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in its Poverty Report 2000: Overcoming Human Poverty: the vision is to create stronger legislative institutions that will contribute to poverty alleviation.
Through this project, the IHRC Africa Region HQ makes the legislatures to see the reason for legislating policy frameworks for succour and welfare in consideration of the peoples yearnings. This is important because the masses watch helplessly as the government authorities are struggling with systemic problems of corruption. The IHRC Inter-Parliamentary Poverty Alleviation Initiatives project is therefore a valid social trust mechanism and the Parlimentarians have been enthused that they see even bigger benefits because the IHRC is a vehicle for recalling administrators to accountability and pressuring them into implementing healthier democratic practices.

Civic and democratic attitudes based on cultural and historical contexts, which the legislatures can copy are discussed with the Committees of the legislatures. This is therefore a partnership creating an original well-functioning, efficient state apparatus through participatory initiatives that help develop the core mechanisms of our representative democracies.
